Program Description

This concentration is for candidates who already hold a bachelor’s degree in Spanish.  If the applicant holds a degree in another field but wishes to become certified in Spanish Education, the applicant must have 21 credit hours (of which at least 12 credit hours must be 3000-level and above) in SPAN (Spanish) content courses. Please note that during the program, you will be required to complete field experiences, including practicums and student teaching/internship. All field experience requirements for any M.A.T. program must be completed in the state of Georgia. Field experiences, including student teaching, for students in the online M.A.T. Concentrations in Elementary Education, Health and Physical Education, Spanish Education, and Special Education will be considered in the Georgia region in which you are located.

What certification will I be eligible for upon completion of this concentration?

Upon successful completion of all program requirements and passing the appropriate GACE exam, you will be eligible for Georgia T-5 Spanish Education Certification (grades P-12). The program is a CAEP-accredited, Georgia Professional Standards Commission-approved program that is recognized through reciprocity in many other states in the U.S.

Admissions Information

  1. Complete the requirements for a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.

  2. Present a transcript evaluation by the College of Education’s Director of the Graduate Academic Services Center, and completion of a specified prerequisite content course work. More about required prerequisite content coursework requirements and the transcript evaluation process.

  3. Present a cumulative 2.50 (4.0 scale) grade point average or higher on all undergraduate and graduate work combined.

  4. Present a total adjusted GPA of 2.75 or higher on all teaching field course work.

  5. Candidates are not required to take either the MAT or the GRE; rather, they must pass an Oral Proficiency Interview and a Writing Proficiency Test in Spanish at the ACTFL-defined IH or above (tests administered by the Department of World Languages and Cultures).

  6. Submit a passing score on the GACE Content Assessment in the area for which one is seeking certification.

  7. Submit a passing score on the state-required Georgia Educator Ethics Assessment.
  8. Qualify for a Georgia Pre-Service certificate or Provisional certificate (see Certification section in the Graduate Catalog).
  9. Acknowledge ”Disclosure and Affirmation” statements that address the Code of Ethics for Educators and the need for tort liability insurance.
  10. International applicants and U.S. citizens whose native language is not English must demonstrate competence in English. Applicants must pass an Oral Proficiency Interview and a Writing Proficiency Test in English at the ACTFL-defined IH or above (tests administered by the Department of World Languages and Cultures).
  11. If an applicant was previously enrolled in an initial teacher preparation program, an interview must be completed with the Program Coordinator prior to admission to the program.

MyPSC Account Requirements: As part of program requirements, once admitted, all applicants must claim Georgia Southern University as their Educator Preparation Program Provider before starting classes. Georgia Pre-Service certificate: Prior to participating in a field experience in the MAT program (which occurs within the first semester), all candidates must have a Georgia Pre-Service Certificate or Provisional/Waiver Teaching Certificate in a field that matches the Program. After you receive your admission acceptance, if you are NOT employed as a teacher of record in a matching content area classroom in Georgia, you will receive an email from the College of Education with the documents required to receive the Pre-Service certificate from the GaPSC. Once you provide the information requested in the documents, it will be sent to the GaPSC by the College of Education Officer.
