Program Description

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) leads to initial teaching certification and a master’s degree for those persons who hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.

Can I complete the concentration online? Yes! During the program, you will be required to complete supervised field experiences in Georgia schools to meet certification requirements.

What background do I need? This online Secondary Education program is designed for Candidates who already hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution and meet content requirements (located here) for one of the following concentrations: biology, broad field science, chemistry, economics, English, history, geography, mathematics, physics, or political science.

What certification will I be eligible for upon completion of this concentration? Upon successful completion of all program requirements and passing the appropriate GACE exam, you will be eligible for Georgia T-5 Secondary Education Certification (grades 6-12) in one of the following teaching fields: biology, science, chemistry, economics, English, history, geography, mathematics, physics, or political science.

The program is a Georgia Professional Standards Commission-approved program.

Prerequisite content coursework, based on the transcript evaluation, must be completed by a non-degree student before admission into the program.

  1. Complete requirements for a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  2. Complete specified prerequisite content coursework for one or more associated content areas.
  3. Present a cumulative 2.50 (4.0 scale) grade point average or higher on all undergraduate and graduate work combined.
  4. Present a total adjusted GPA of 2.75 or higher on content courses in the selected area of certification.
  5. Submit a passing score on the GACE Content Assessment in the area for which one is seeking certification.
  6. Submit a passing score on the state-required Georgia Educator Ethics Assessment.
  7. Qualify for a Georgia Pre-Service certificate or Provisional certificate.
  8. Acknowledge ”Disclosure and Affirmation” statements that address the Code of Ethics for Educators and the need for tort liability insurance.
  9. If an applicant was previously enrolled in an initial teacher preparation program, an interview must be completed with the Program Coordinator prior to admission to the program.

Georgia Pre-Service certificate: Prior to participating in a field experience in the MAT program (which occurs within the first semester), all candidates must have a Georgia Pre-Service Certificate or Provisional/Waiver Teaching Certificate in a field that matches the Program.
